There are wide ranges of secondary schools, maintained and independent, in Hackney and beyond. In 2005 a new London-wide system was introduced for secondary school admissions. All 33 London boroughs, together with eight councils bordering the capital, have signed up to a new system to co-ordinate admissions to their secondary schools.
Under this London Schools Admissions System, parents list the schools that they want to apply for on one form, ranking them in order of preference. (This is important as only one offer will be made and this will be from the highest ranked school able to make an offer). This form is then returned to the local authority in which the child lives.
The selection of secondary school is one of the most important decisions parents or carers must make. To help with this process, the Headteacher normally invites all Year 5 parents into school during the summer term to meet with them to discuss the process. This is then followed up in the autumn term with an individual appointment to discuss the choice of secondary school and to complete the secondary transfer form. At Gainsborough, we support the children through this process and have well established links with the local secondary schools. Carol Lewis, our family support officer, can help with the application process.
