Last week at Gainsborough…
Assessments
Years 1 -5 have completed assessments this week in reading and in maths. The tests assess the learning throughout the year and are based on coverage of the curriculum this academic year. The children showed great determination and resilience in the tests, well done!
Keeping Healthy
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we are looking at Keep Healthy. We are focusing on healthy eating this half term. Children will get the opportunity to try new herbs and vegetables in an attempt to encourage us all to make healthier choices. We will also look at what healthy endings look like as we say goodbye to this academic year.
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

We have been developing our approach to science teaching and the children have really enjoyed the recent changes to our science curriculum. We have worked on developing a much more practical curriculum with a greater focus on the working scientifically skills. This has really improved the children’s subject knowledge and engagement in lessons. Come along and have a look for yourself!
Attendance at Gainsborough
We are working hard to ensure good attendance at Gainsborough. To help you understand the importance in having good school attendance, we will be informing you about how we teach cycles of learning at Gainsborough in each week’s newsletter. We want families to understand the impact of absence on well being, the progress in subjects, friendships and the work load absence has on the school work force. We are doing this to help families be more mindful about taking days off.
Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is a broad term. It describes children and young people who have severe difficulty in attending school due to emotional factors. This often results in prolonged absences from school.
It is difficult to estimate the prevalence of EBSA. In the UK it affects approximately 2% of the school population. There is a slightly higher prevalence for secondary school students. It is equally common in males and females with little evidence of a link to socioeconomic status.
The impact of EBSA on young people is far reaching. Difficulties can often quickly spiral requiring inpatient treatment. Outcomes for young people who display EBSA include:
- poor academic attainment
- reduced social opportunities
- limited employment opportunities
- poor adult mental health.
The Educational Psychology Service have produced some guidance for EBSA. It’s based on the current evidence for factors which contribute to positive outcomes. These include:
- intervening early
- working with parents and school staff as well as the young person
- working in a flexible way, paying attention to the individual
- emphasising the need for rapid return to school
- good support and adaptations within the school environment.
