Last week at Gainsborough…
Refugee Week
Refugee week is 17-22nd June, for more information on the what and why of refugee week, please see here https://refugeeweek.org.uk/
We thought about what a refugee is this week. The children were incredibly aware of the negative impact of being a refugee on your health. They were able to talk about the lack of sleep, the lack of shelter and the inability to prepare and eat healthy food. In their homework, Years 1-5 will retell the story of becoming a refugee. Please listen to this story with your child this week https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIxZT_s8BcE
Year 6 Residential Trip Kench Hill
Year 6 have returned. A huge thank you to Coach Terry and Ms Muganga for giving up their time to take the children away for 5 days and 4 nights! We are very proud of their behaviour, attitude, bravery and new found independence. The only negative, they reported, was having to come home! Well done Year 6.
Year 1 Chalkwell Beach Trip
Year 1 ventured along the C2C to Chalkwell beach! Thank you to the families that came along, without volunteers these wonderful trips would not be possible. The children threw stones, counted the shells, built sand castles, and buried their legs. They went equipped with everything for a British Summer’s day and luckily were blessed with some wonderful sunshine. Well done Year 1!
Year 2 Tower of London Trip
Year 2 visited the crown jewels this week. They travelled to Tower Hill and visited the Tower of London. They noticed London landmarks they have researched in their geography learning and were fascinated by the history of the Tower of London. Well done Year 2.
Cycling Club at the Olympic Park BMX Track
British Cycling run a cycling club at Gainsborough every Thursday. Last week the children were invited to the BMX track on the Olympic Park. They were only invited back this week and have been offered a more regular slot at the BMX track. Watch this space for the launch of another cycling club with Year 4 students due to the talents the children hold and the wonderful coaches at British Cycling. Thank you British Cycling.
Keeping Healthy
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we are looking at Keep Healthy. We are focusing on healthy eating this half term. Children will get the opportunity to try new herbs and vegetables in an attempt to encourage us all to make healthier choices. We will also look at what healthy endings look like as we say goodbye to this academic year.
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Tender UK – Parent Workshop Tuesday 25th June 5-6pm, Managing Emotions
RE:SET – Relationships Education: School’s Equality Toolkit
Gainsborough Primary School is proud to be working towards becoming a Healthy Relationships Champion Setting this year. We’ve partnered up with Tender Education and Arts (www.tender.org.uk) to complete RE:SET; an online toolkit and whole school campaign to award our school for promoting a culture of healthy, equal and respectful relationships. Since September 2020, it is statutory for all schools to teach relationships education and it’s a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the incredible work we already do as well as ensuring the whole school community takes on the responsibility of preventing gender-based violence and keeping our children safe, healthy and prepared for the modern world.
During this year, Tender will deliver training, workshops and creative campaigns alongside our children and staff, and offer sessions to families and parents. We are excited to start this journey with the RE:SET team, and to see how it will benefit both our school culture and our
children’s futures. We are keen to hear the perspectives of parents and carers, and we are inviting you to take part
in a short survey (below), so Tender can create bespoke parent/carer sessions for Gainsborough Primary.

Attendance at Gainsborough
We are working hard to ensure good attendance at Gainsborough. To help you understand the importance in having good school attendance, we will be informing you about how we teach cycles of learning at Gainsborough in each week’s newsletter. We want families to understand the impact of absence on well being, the progress in subjects, friendships and the work load absence has on the school work force. We are doing this to help families be more mindful about taking days off.
