Last week at Gainsborough…
Whole School Composting
We were struck a blow with the weather during our outdoor assembly this week. Our classes ate fruit in their classrooms and gathered the fruit waste together. We used this to compost. This will help our new flowers grow and we will all be able to add compost to the flower beds over the coming weeks. If you would like further information about how to compost at home we will be running workshops in the summer term to showcase how to compost at home.
Year 4 trip to
Year 4 visited the Ragged School Museum this week. They learnt about how Victorian schools functioned in the 1900’s and what life was like for children who were not lucky enough to go to school. They also used this knowledge to create a very informative assembly about the life and times of children at school. They used their knowledge from history to write diary entries as Oliver Twist. Great work Year 4.
Year 5 trip to the British Museum
Year 5 visited the British Museum this week. They were fascinated with the Viking artifacts they were able to touch and investigate. The children have been enthralled by Viking invasions and have used their new find knowledge to write diary entries as Viking Invaders.
Keeping Green
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we are looking at Keep Green. We will raise awareness of the following events and ways of being more sustainable at school and at home:
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Attendance at Gainsborough
We are working hard to ensure good attendance at Gainsborough. To help you understand the importance in having good school attendance, we will be informing you about how we teach cycles of learning at Gainsborough in each week’s newsletter. We want families to understand the impact of absence on well being, the progress in subjects, friendships and the work load absence has on the school work force. We are doing this to help families be more mindful about taking days off.
This week’s ‘absence impact snapshot’:
A family member books a holiday over a half term but your child will also miss 4 days of school either side of half term. You consider asking your family to move dates however you decide 4 days of missed school isn’t very much. Your child misses their end of term carrot point rewards and the celebration certificates they have earned that term. Your child also misses the start of a new unit in reading, writing and maths, science and history. This means that when they return to school they are confused in all lessons throughout the week. Your child has missed the explanations of the new seating plan and has missed the chance to change seats or voice their thoughts, everyone else is now settled. The groups they are part of seem really happy however your child is now quiet and feels quite unhappy at school.
Family holidays are a must for all families. We ask our families to recognise the difficulties in missing school mean for your child, our staff and the longer term impact on their learning. Missing some lessons isn’t going to mean they fall drastically behind but missing some lessons, activities, celebrations and new beginnings can mean they feel further behind their peers. Taking time off in term time is a mindset, we ask that our families insist their children are in school so they have the best possible chances of being successful and happy at all times.
