This week at Gainsborough…
Science Week!
We experienced awe and wonder this week during British Science Week across the school. Children completed a simple science experiment in class linked to their current science learning. They then made observational drawings of their experiment and thought about what they had learnt from it. Children were also asked to complete the same experiment at home and write this up as homework. Our families, from Years 1-6, were also invited into classes to join the fun. Thank you to all our parents who attended, it means a lot to our school community to carry out parents in class events. Well done Gainsborough, a really enjoyable week.
Parent’s Evening Meetings
Thank you to those families who were able to come into school to meet with class teachers about their child’s learning. It was lovely to hear such fabulous feedback from teachers about the progress children have made. If you were not able to come into school to meet this week then please ask to speak to your child’s class teacher, after school, so that you can see your child’s learning in their books. Please do this before the Easter Break.
We Wore Red for Comic Relief
We wore red this week to raise money for Comic Relief. We learnt about some of the charities Comic Relief sponsors and reflected on what it means to give to charities who help others. We felt good about our efforts and we raised £87 as a community!
Keeping Connected in our Community…
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we are reflecting on what it means to celebrate events and traditions across our mixed community. We will learn about the the roots and traditions of Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Easter, Eid and also reflect on how it feels to take part in awareness days like World Book Day and Science Week.
Family Cooking Programme
We have bid for some money to run a family cooking programme at Gainsborough. The project will bring together our Circular Food Economy lead, who will show us how to grow some of the food we are cooking with, and our school Chef Chris, who will show us how to cook some recipes and talk about the choices we make when cooking. The aims of the project are:
- to provide a healthy meal to families
- to enable families to cook more sustainable meals
- to enable families to make healthier choices
- to develop relationships between school and home
We will be running the project weekly from 3.30-5pm on Friday through the Summer term. We would like to focus on food from different cultures each half term. Families who have links to that culture, or those who just like the food, are welcome to come to each course. A survey to gauge interest and gather your ideas will be sent via email soon.
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

After School Club Collection Times
After Easter we are asking families to adhere to agreed collection times for after school clubs. This is to support the safety of all children at the end of the school day. Families are asked to collect promptly at 5pm from the main office or playground from after school clubs. Families are asked to collect from play centre provision at 6pm. This is for both EYFS play centre and Years 1 -6 play centre. All 6pm collections will go through the schools main office to ensure the safe collection of all children. We are no longer able to allow parents access to the school via the side gates between 5-6pm.
Cycling to School – Safety Reminder
We would like to remind all families that those cycling and scooting to school are expected to dismount before entering the school premises. Under no circumstances are children, or parents, able to cycle in our school playgrounds or entrances. This is to protect everyone. Staff will approach families to ask them to dismount from bikes and scooters while in the playground. We would like to thank you in advance for taking this request seriously and for your support with keeping everyone safe.
