This week at Gainsborough…
Year 1 trip to the Sealife Centre
Year 1 visited the Sealife Centre on Friday. The children were amazed by the huge variety of sealife they saw. They fed back that the trip was excellent and that they saw sharks, who swam right passed them while they watched through the window. They touched star fish which were rough and scratchy and they really enjoyed their day. Well done to the staff who managed the trip, it was wonderful to hear the children so animated about their day!
International Women’s Day Football Tournament
Our girls football team took part in a football tournament for International Women’s Day! The traveled to Berger school to take part in a tournament and went on to come third. They returned in high spirits with some medals and reflected on how important it is for girls to try a range of different sports. Well done girls- you are amazing!
World Book Day Wonder
We celebrated world book day in style this week! We had some wonderful costumes and children brought in some really wonderful books to share with their friends. We made some story boxes in our classes based on the books we have been reading. We shared the story boxes with other classes and retold our stories to our friends. The younger children really enjoyed listening to the stories told by the older children and we were really impressed with how confident and articulate our younger children were when retelling their stories. A reception child told me ‘the big children knew our stories, when I am bigger I will know all of the stories and I will share them!’ Well done Gainsborough, a really lovely world book day had by all. Year 1 and Year 6 will share their story boxes on Monday. Year 1 will retell the Rainbow Fish while Year 6 will retell a scene from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to Year 1.
Keeping Connected in our Community…
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we are reflecting on what it means to celebrate events and traditions across our mixed community. We will learn about the the roots and traditions of Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Easter, Eid and also reflect on how it feels to take part in awareness days like World Book Day and Science Week.
Family Cooking Programme
We have bid for some money to run a family cooking programme at Gainsborough. The project will bring together our Circular Food Economy lead, who will show us how to grow some of the food we are cooking with, and our school Chef Chris, who will show us how to cook some recipes and talk about the choices we make when cooking. The aims of the project are:
- to provide a healthy meal to families
- to enable families to cook more sustainable meals
- to enable families to make healthier choices
- to develop relationships between school and home
We will be running the project weekly from 3.30-5pm on Friday through the Summer term. We would like to focus on food from different cultures each half term. Families who have links to that culture, or those who just like the food, are welcome to come to each course. A survey to gauge interest and gather your ideas will be sent via email soon.

Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Parent’s Evening – Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th March
Please sign up for parent’s evening via the school office. We are still running a paper based booking system, if you cannot make it into school please email the office admin@gainsborough.hackney.sch.uk requesting a time slot for your appointment. This is a good opportunity for families to learn about what your children excels in at school, the way they learn and the types of things they have been learning about. It is also a good opportunity to tell us what you have noticed about your child’s learning and find out ways in which you can support your child at home. We have some information sessions in the hall during this parents evening and all families are asked to wait in the hall for their appointments then staff will come and take families to classes when teachers are ready. We hope the sessions in the hall give you further information about our WAHM’s clinician, holiday camps at Easter, our Circular Food Economy project and lots more!

Happy Mother’s Day
Happy Mother’s Day to the mothers, the mother figures and those taking on the role of mothers in our community.
“Motherhood is a choice you make everyday, to put someone else’s happiness and well-being ahead of your own, to teach the hard lessons, to do the right thing even when you’re not sure what the right thing is … and to forgive yourself, over and over again, for doing everything wrong.” —Donna Ball, “At Home On Ladybug Farm”
