This week at Gainsborough…
Year 6 Family Sharing
Year 6 blew our socks off, yet again, with a class sharing assembly based on their work on the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They owned the stage as several children took on key roles to retell the scene of Lucy’s encounter with Mr Tumnus. Their ability to learn their lines, act with such confidence and tell the story like true professionals was really impressive. Well done Ms Muganga and Year 6.
Reception Trip to Mudchute Farm
Reception enjoyed a trip to Mudchute Farm. They went with lots of lovely family members which really helped with the travel and the engagement while at the farm. Thank you families, this is so helpful and supportive. The class were perfectly behaved but the animals were not! The children loved the greedy goats and the sleepy pigs.
Keep Safe
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we have introduced the idea of giving your time to causes and issues to keep safe.
Year 3 Canals and Rivers Trust Walk
Year 3 walked the River Lea on Friday to find about the dangers of water and how to keep safe. They fed back that to keep safe near the canal, and the river Lea, we must be sensible, aware and call for help if anyone gets into danger. They also learnt about the construction of the canal and how why the water doesn’t ‘flow’ in a canal. Thank you to the Canals and Rivers Trust, we appreciate your time and hard work in keeping us safe.
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Keeping Connected in our Community…
Parents in Class – Rights Respecting Schools Display
This week we all contributed to a piece of art which will make a giant collaborative piece of art work for our school! We have decided to raise the profile of the Rights Respecting Schools agenda at a time in the world where it couldn’t be more poignant. We are going to hang our whole school art work in a space for everyone to see. The art work will also display the 42 Articles that make the UN convention of the Rights of the Child. Thank you to all of the parents who came into school to work with their children to complete the art work. The ‘Parent in Class’ sessions are designed to be fun, low risk and not teachers to teach new concepts and learning to the children. We really enjoy and value parents coming into classes to support these sessions, thank you!
Family Cooking Programme
We have bid for some money to run a family cooking programme at Gainsborough. The project will bring together our Circular Food Economy lead, who will show us how to grow some of the food we are cooking with, and our school Chef Chris, who will show us how to cook some recipes and talk about the choices we make when cooking. The aims of the project are:
- to provide a healthy meal to families
- to enable families to cook more sustainable meals
- to enable families to make healthier choices
- to develop relationships between school and home
We will be running the project weekly from 3.30-5pm on Friday through the Summer term. We would like to focus on food from different cultures each half term. Families who have links to that culture, or those who just like the food, are welcome to come to each course. A survey to gauge interest and gather your ideas will be sent via email soon.

Next week at Gainsborough…
New Outdoor Classroom
While we all enjoy a break over half term, some very important work will be taking place in our playground. As part of our Circular Food Economy project our outdoor classroom will be built. This area will take up most of the playground next to the car park. It will consist of planters, a bark bit, tables and chairs for learning and relaxing, and some blackboards. This area has been in desperate need to upgrading and we are really pleased this is no underway. We will not be allowed to use the playground for break times or lunch times in week 1 or to line up the children at the end of the day. We will be able to use the playground for access. Please drop off and collect years 1, 2 and 3 from the Reception playground behind the Children’s Centre. Staff will be on hand on Monday morning to help with this.
Valentine’s Disco
We are having our annual family disco on Friday 23rd February, 5-7pm. Please come along to raise funds for the new school outdoor classroom. There will be food, drinks, a photo booth, face painting and card making, dancing and party games! All welcome, entry fee on the door, £5 = 5 tickets.
