This week at Gainsborough…
No Pens Day! – We didn’t use a single pen on Wednesday. We worked in different pairs and groups and learnt in different ways. We really enjoyed the paired reading across the school. Our older children read with fluency and clarified words for the younger children, they asked them questions and helped deepen their understanding of the books they read together. We are incredibly proud of how they nurtured and looked after the younger children this week. Our younger children were in awe! They really enjoyed having that special one to one session with someone older and wiser.
Year 5 visited Kew Gardens – The children really enjoyed visiting the different environments created at Kew and spent time in the Palm house living and breathing the tropical air. They saw a Kapok Tree which linked to a text they had been reading in class, which made their learning come to life! Naomi said “The tree was much smaller than I thought but it was very old and very important.”
Year 6 Junior Citizenship Programme
Year 6 visited Forest Road Youth Centre who hosted a range of emergency services this year to inform children about keeping themselves and others safe. They learned about a variety of different topics during the interactive workshops, such as road safety, dental care, using public transport safely, opening a bank account, and what to do in the case of a fire.
The Junior Citizenship Scheme is coordinated by the London Transport Museum from Transport for London in partnership with Young Hackney
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
