Last week at Gainsborough…
Zero Waste Event
Hackney Council ran their well established Zero waste event at Gainsborough last Saturday. Visitors donated clothes, toys and books and in return picked up items to take home. They also offered bike repairs, electrical appliance repairs and clothes repairs- all completely free. Gainsborough staff were also on site and hosted an open day session at the Children’s Centre, selling hot chocolate, home made baked goods and plants. The event was very well attended and we hope to use these new partnerships with Traid and Hackney Fixers to establish more sustainability events at Gainsborough. Watch this space!
No Pens Day
Years 1 -6 took on some different learning challenges this Tuesday as they took part in Speech and Language Uk’s No Pens Day initiative. It was great to see children learn in a range of different ways and for some it was really great to give writing a bit of a rest! We cooked, completed a treasure hunt, played oracy games and used AI to write our own songs! No Pens Day gave space for teachers and children to think about the different types of learning that works best for them. We introduced different types of learners in assembly and children have been asked to write about their best lesson this year. They have been asked to think about what kind of learning they do best in: learning by physically doing, hearing and writing, musically, in groups or by them themselves. We look at meta-cognition, learning how we learn, more throughout the school year.
Year 6 TfL Junior Citizens
Year 6 visited the TfL Junior Citizenship programme this week. The children had the opportunity to participate in the following activities:
Hackney Health and WellBeing team – dental hygiene and mental health strategies
Transport for London – safe and sensible bus and train travel with a Zip Oyster card
Met Police safer transport team – robbery and reporting
Hackney Road safety – crossing awareness and stopping distances
London Fire Brigade – proactive advice and escape route
London Ambulance – quick first aid
Met Police school officers – risks and awareness around knife crime
The children really enjoyed this annual event and learnt so much. Thank you to all of the services who showcased their education programmes.

Annual General Meeting for FRoG’s, Friday 6th December 2.30pm
We are hoping to expand our support network through our school PTA, the FRoG’s (Friends of Gainsborough). We understand lots of people have jobs, younger children and other commitments but we would like some more parent support to plan events, and carry them out. Please join our AGM on Friday 6th December at 2.30pm in the community room in the Children’s Centre.
Christmas Jumper Day , Friday 13th December
Christmas Jumper Day is on Friday 13th December at Gainsborough. We will be selling our own Christmas jumpers from Friday 6th December in the school office, to raise money for the school.
Parents in Class and FRoG’s Christmas Party , Monday 16th December from 2.45pm
We are holding a parents in class event on Monday 16th December at 2.45-3.20pm. This event welcomes families into years 1 -6 to take part in some learning with the chidlren. Families get a chance to complete an activity with the children and see what life is like in their classroom. These are not model lessons or taught sessions, they are often a chance for children to complete something with their parents that they have been successful in already and a chance to do these things together. This parents in class will be seasonal decoration making!
After parents in class we will have our Annual FRoG’s Christmas party. This will be a traditional party with party games, activities, our community kitchen will be open for cooking activities, a younger children’s area, and there will be a fund raising raffle! The party will take place from 3.30-5.30pm. All families are welcome to come and celebrate the end of term with us.
