Last week at Gainsborough…
Year 2 went to the Zoo!
Year 2 went to the Zoo, with an army of parents, a gaggle of excited girls and boys and determined teachers. They loved the animals, who were out in full force! They particularly enjoyed the penguins, the sleepy lions and the noisy Colobus monkies. Staff reported that the children’s behaviour and listening skills were brilliant. Thank you to the families who supported us on this trip, it isn’t possible without your help. Now the children have the hard work to complete in science: identifying their features and describing, sorting and classifying the animals into different groups and matching them to different habitats.
Year 3 went to Hackney Museum
Year 3 have kicked off our focus on Black History Month this week with a visit to Hackney Museum. They have learnt about the origins of carnival and what that means for different community groups in Hackney. If you would like to visit the exhibition https://hackney-museum.hackney.gov.uk/whats-on/current-exhibition/
Year 4 went back to Ancient Rome!
Year 4 made the long trip through central London to the British Museum this week. They traveled back in time to Ancient Rome and saw artifacts from across the Roman Empire, from vases to coins, weaponry and household objects. Seeing artifacts in real life will help the children’s long term memory and understanding of this period of ancient history.
Year 5 went MAD!
Year 5 visited a local circular economy https://www.areyoumad.co/ They sorted every day plastic waste and used the mold and processing machines to make some incredible new, plastic items. They cam back to school inspired to recycle more and seriously impressed with what a local organisation in our community is doing. We hope to do some more work with Are You Mad while Year 5 will be collecting your plastic bottle tops in the meantime for their keep green campaign! Great work Year 5.

Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Black History Month
As we head into October we will pay particular attention to celebrating black culture. We will do the following to raise awareness of the importance of under represented figures of black history by:
- looking at historical black figures in our history units
- listening to music by black artists in assembly
- learning about a black poet, preforming their poems and focusing on our presentation skills
- hosting a parents in class session celebrating our learning Friday 25th October 2.45pm
- hosting a Black History Month Family Feast on Friday 25th October 3.30-5.30pm

You can bring your whole family, enjoy some group cooking and learn how to compost and grow at home. Please email admin@gainsborough.hackney.sch.uk to book your place! The families who attend these sessions will be the first to try out our new community kitchen, we would really value your feedback and your time. Please come along.
World Mental Health Day – 11th October 2024
At Gainsborough we know how important it is to look after our own and others’ mental health. We know making choice to keep us happy, asking others’ questions to understand their feelings and respecting difference are key parts of keeping our own and others’s feelings safe. This week we will have ‘Talk and Tea’ times for families, staff and children on Friday to give everyone that chance to chat and connect.
Families can join us in the Children’s Centre from 9-10am and 3-4pm on Friday to chat and give each other 5 minutes of connection.
Staff will be served mint tea throughout the day in our new staffroom and we hope they have a chance to take some time to connect with other colleagues.
Children are invited to wear yellow to show their awareness and support to look after our own and others’ mental health. They will also be offered mint tea and time to talk with adults throughout the day.
