This week at Gainsborough…
This week at Gainsborough we have seen the fruits of our labour, quite literally. We have harvested some of the fruit and vegetables we planted in the Summer term. The children were really excited to see pumpkins, sweetcorn, tomatoes and a large range of herbs, ready for picking and Chef Chris has been asked to add them to our lunch service. Next week, we will see the installation of 2 large poly tunnels in the playground. One of these will house raised beds, which will grow a range of fruit and vegetables. The second will house hydroponic planting, which involves planting in towers with zero soil! The work we are doing with MAD Leap is funded by the LLDC Carbon Emissions Reduction Fund which is a one off funded project. The learning for staff and children will be added to curriculum plans and we will then plan to become self sufficient and sell our home grown fruit and vegetables. Move over oddbox- Hackney Wick has a new green grocer in town!
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Keep Kind
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we are focusing on Keep Kind. We are asking families to help us collect some items to support our learning next week. We need: glass jars to start a seed bank. We will collect seeds from our home grown produce and save the seeds ready to germinate and plant next season. Large clean, glass jars are welcome. We are also looking for 5 litre water bottles to build a wormery in Year 1. If you have either of these things please donate them via the school office next week.
Keeping Connected in our Community this week…
Year 5 have supported a canal clean up this week at the Leaside Trust. The children learnt to paddle in the canal boats while cleaning up a section of the Lea. The experience supported their current learning about Rivers. On the way back the children were set a foraging challenge by our Circular Food Economy Lead Ana. Ana asked them to forage for blackberries, cleavers, yarrow and rosehip. Well done Year 5, you have contributed to positively to our local area.
At Gainsborough Next Week…
The children would like to invite families to launch Black History Month with you. Years 4, 5, 6 will perform in a Gainsborough Carnival on Friday 6th October at 2.45pm. We have been working with TARU Arts for 2 terms and the drumming and performance the children have pulled together is wonderful. Years 1, 2 and 3 are having a day of Anansi story telling and book making. We would like to invite families in on to see the final published books the children make on Friday 6th October at 2.45pm.
