This week at Gainsborough…
We saw the return of our youngest learners this week, and wow what a return. The Ducklings (2 Year old’s), Geese and Swans Class (3 Year old’s) and Reception Wrens started school this academic year with a huge amount of energy, a great positive attitude and had a really calm start to the year. The children and families have taken the return to school like ducks to water (excuse the pun) and we are very proud at how everyone has settled into the routines and structure of the day. Well done families, staff and children!
Nut Free School
We wrote to parents this week to inform them we are becoming a nut free school. We have several children with nut allergies and while we do put plans in place to train children, and ensure they are aware of their allergies, the safest way to protect this children is to ask that no nuts be brought onto the school sight. For more information please see the letters emailed to you.
Reader of the Week
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Keep Kind
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we have focused on Keep Kind. This week we saw Year 3 demonstrate kindness with organising a Biker’s Breakfast for our school. Year 3 are campaigning for more children to cycle to school and have been thinking about ways to help that happen. They have learnt how cycling is not only showing kindness to our bodies but also the environment. We welcomed All About the Bike East to our school playground who repaired our damaged bikes and scooters. Thank you for showing kindness in offering your time and expertise @allaboutthebikeeast We drank mint tea, provided to us by our new Gardener Ana. Ana is going to support us to learn about planting and nutrition and also look after our newly planted fruit and vegetables. Chef Chris also gave his time to prepare breakfast bagels and home made carrot and chocolate cake. I think that demonstrates a huge amount of kindness in our Gainsborough Community! Thank you all who contributed, well done Year 3!
Keeping Connected in our Community this week…
We have been getting ready for the Hackney Wick Carnival. Please come and join us this Sunday 17th September from 12-4pm at Gainsborough. Children from Years 4, 5 and 6 will join TARU Arts parade at roughly 2.50pm and parade to Hackney Bridge and back. This is the first time Hackney Carnival has taken place in Hackney Wick and we are really excited to be a host, and perform in this event. Parents of children in Years 4, 5, 6 who are performing please arrive at 2pm to rehearse and get ready.
At Gainsborough Next Week…
We are relaunching homework in stages this month to ensure everyone is clear on the expectations in their new year group. Week 1 saw children bring reading logs and reading books home, week 2 introduced spelling words and maths questions, with a reminder to use our online learning platforms each week. Week 3 will see writing homework reintroduced as well as the above. We do encourage children to complete these elements of learning in homework club or at home. These activities communicate to parents the levels children are working at and help parents support children’s learning at home. It is a good insight for parents to see how children approach learning, the skills they have, the support they need and the academic progress they make. Our writing homework links to whole school themes which we often share in assembly and important messages are often shared through this homework. We hope you find the home learning valuable. We will be adding workshop dates for families to come and learn more about our approach to home learning and how to support your child.
