Last week at Gainsborough…
Earth Day
We wore blue, green and brown on Friday to raise awareness of Earth Day and the need for us all to do the small things to help save the planet. In this week’s outdoor assembly the children spelled out ‘Earth Day’ in their classes, using their bodies to make each letter. This will be made into a poster for each class and will help us remember what we can do to keep making small steps to be greener.
Year 1 trip to Woodberry Wetlands
Year 1 were excited, as always, to embark on a trip to the Wetlands. They have looked at what grows in the wetlands, seasonal changes over the year and what animals we often see in Spring in the wetlands. We are very proud of their excellent listening skills, safe behaviour and engagement in the activities on their trip. Well done Year 1!
Keeping Green
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we are looking at Keep Green. We will raise awareness of the following events and ways of being more sustainable at school and at home:
Each week we will award one child from Years 1-6 with a new book, as the Reader of the Week. The award is for commitment, reading progress, engagement or sharing their love for reading. Please support your child with reading at home! After all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Attendance at Gainsborough
We are working hard to ensure good attendance at Gainsborough. To help you understand the importance in having good school attendance, we will be informing you about how we teach cycles of learning at Gainsborough in each week’s newsletter. We want families to understand the impact of absence on well being, the progress in subjects, friendships and the work load absence has on the school work force. We are doing this to help families be more mindful about taking days off.
This week’s ‘absence impact snapshot’:
Your child misses 3 days of school for a cough. They return and a new child has joined the class. The new child has been welcomed into the class and new partners and seating plans have been created. Your child was off school when children got into new groups and feels uncomfortable with their new seat. They are also really confused about the maths learning as they have missed 3 days of learning. The teacher notices that your child is quieter than usual and works with them in the afternoons to help them catch up in maths. The teacher cannot complete the ‘welcome to our class’ sessions again but does move your child, the move helps but your child would have preferred the changes hadn’t happened at all. The teacher explains next week will be better when we start new learning and they are used to the new seating plans.
