This week at Gainsborough…
Year 1 Family Sharing
Year 1 gave us a very special performance this week in their family sharing assembly. They read aloud, and enacted, instructions on how to make a puppet. They showed us their hand made puppets that they made last term in DT, linking to their toys unit. We were really impressed with their reading and speaking, their acting out of their instructions and their overall performance. Year 1, you are amazing.
Year 5 and 6 NFL Tournament Winners
We are very proud of our NFL team who came first in a local NFL tournament. Coach Terry told us the children worked well as a team, were supportive of each other, listened to one and others’ ideas and demonstrated some real talent. Dominik scored an incredible touch down to win the tournament, he was nominated as most valuable player. Well done for trying something new Gainsborough, and thank you to Coach Terry for your excellent coaching.
Hackney School of Food Trips
We visited Hackney School of Food, located next to Mandeville Primary School in Clapton. The children who attend the Aviary provision attended and so did Year 3. The children learnt to cook pizza, and a vegetable soup. Using fresh, home grown ingredients and were taught by a trained chef. It was a wonderful experience, thank you Hackney School of Food.
Keep Safe
Each half term we focus on a different Gainsborough Keep: kind, connected, safe, healthy, green or giving. This half term we have introduced the idea of giving your time to causes and issues to keep safe.
Year 2 and the Fire Brigade
Year 2 had a visitor from the London Fire Brigade. They learnt about how to keep safe in a fire and some good fire prevention strategies. The children will provide some information for the rest of the school on how to keep safe. The children fedback that they now know to turn appliances off when not in use and not to use old appliances. Thank you to London Fire Brigade, the talk was fantastic.
Safer Internet Workshops
In week 6 we are running a series of workshops for parents around internet safety. We will be inviting you and your child to attend these workshops to share what the law states about the use of the internet, develop rules around the use of the internet for children, and look at strategies you can use to manage your child’s screen time and the use of the internet in your home.

Keeping Connected in our Community…
Tree Planting at Gainsborough
Thank you to our wonderful families who came to help us plant trees on Friday. We planted over over 20 trees. We have made tress planters out of tyres rather than buy new tree planters. These will house some trees indefinitely as they will not grow too large. We have also planted over 20 trees in containers which will need to be relocated as they get larger. We have learnt so much from Ana, our Circular Food Economy lead. Watch this space for our up and coming work on composting, our next venture.
Family Cooking Programme
We have bid for some money to run a family cooking programme at Gainsborough. The project will bring together our Circular Food Economy lead, who will show us how to grow some of the food we are cooking with, and our school Chef Chris, who will show us how to cook some recipes and talk about the choices we make when cooking. The aims of the project are:
- to provide a healthy meal to families
- to enable families to cook more sustainable meals
- to enable families to make healthier choices
- to develop relationships between school and home
We will be running the project weekly from 3.30-5pm on Friday through the Summer term. We would like to focus on food from different cultures each half term. Families who have links to that culture, or those who just like the food, are welcome to come to each course. A survey to gauge interest and gather your ideas will be sent via email soon.
